Community Star: Battling breast cancer, step-by-step

Each quarter, AutoNation selects associates who have demonstrated an above and beyond desire to help those less fortunate in the communities we serve. In their honor, we will donate either $500 for individual efforts or $1,000 for team efforts to their charities. To read more Community Star features, click here.

AutoNation is proud to recognize Jan Learing as an AutoNation Community Star for her participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Race for the Cure. Jan put together a fundraising team that raised over $13,000 and walked in the three-day, 60-mile race last October.  Jan is a Support Desk Manager at AutoNation’s Shared Services Center in Dallas, Texas.

“My motto is, ‘I will because I can’. I feel privileged to walk for this phenomenal cause to fight breast cancer that has touched so many,” said Jan. “My team and I are called “Teri’s Troops” and we’re walking for Teri, a friend who has been fighting cancer for many years and for my sister-in-law who lost her battle this past May.”

According to Jan, they have both sad stories and good stories to tell. Jan’s friend Teri was pregnant with her first child when she found out she had cancer. She put off treatment to have the baby, who is now a healthy seven-year-old. While Teri still battles cancer, her story is both heroic and inspiring to her team.

Usually, participants in the 3-Day Race for the Cure camp for two nights, but Jan and her team opted for a hotel room. According to Jan, “even with four women sleeping in one room, it’s still better than spending the night on a deflated air mattress on the hard ground.”

We congratulate Jan on her community outreach and will donate $500 in Jan’s name to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
